The Resident Evil canon is positively huge and utterly ridiculous, encompassing near twenty games, several animated movies, as well as several comics and novels. As such, only major players and events are covered within this setting description. Despite the attempts to condense while not omitting details key to Sheva and Resident Evil 5 in particular, the canon description is lengthy.

UMBRELLA
Meet the company that started the whole shitstorm that is bioterrorism. Founded by a short list of pretentious white gentlemen with seemingly unlimited resources and political clout in 1968, Umbrella Corporation eventually grew into a massive conglomerate. Unsurprisingly, the motivation behind the venture was money, power, and the desire to become an immortal god. All of this would be gained at the expense of some third world country. In this case, a Lord, Knight, and a Doctor continued the time honored tradition of pillaging Africa for profit. And the key to all they sought stemmed from a flower: the Stairway of the Sun, otherwise known as the Sonnentreppe.

The discovery of the Stairway of the Sun flower by Westerners first occurred during the explorations of Henry Travis, who spent thirty-five years exploring Africa to write a 72 part encyclopedia titled Natural History Conspectus. It entailed details not only of the location of this particularly special flower, but the locations of precious minerals. Of course, his brother couldn’t have others finding these lucrative locations of future company profits, so like an adult, he spread rumors about his brother writing more fiction than truth. Consequently, book sales tanked, Henry died two years later, and Travis Industries enjoyed record annual revenues for years thereafter.

Due to the innate greed of Travis Industries, the Ndipaya enjoyed several more decades of being left alone to continue their tradition of choosing a leader via the native flower. The worthy candidates would eat the flowers that contained a highly potent non-carcinogenic mutagen, now known as the Progenitor virus. Whoever survived not only became their leader, but would also inherit great strength, or so the legends say. The tribe of West Africans lived near the Kijuju coastal region, primarily in a vast, underground kingdom they constructed, and were once again discovered by Westerners in September of 1966, when an expedition led by Lord Oswell E. Spencer and Dr. James Marcus arrived at their city.

As men of self-importance and tradition, conflict soon erupted between the two groups. The result being that Spencer et al. remained for three additional months, leaving only when they got what they wanted. In some small, karmic victory, the samples they had retrieved failed to produce the immortality virus they so desired. Oh, and Sir Edward Ashford, the aforementioned Knight, also died from exposure to the virus.

The victory was short lived. Following the failure to replicate the necessary conditions in which to grow plants that would actually produce the desired virus, Spencer suggested that they simply relieve the Ndipaya of their land and build a research center in situ to the worshipped flowers. Several companies of armed soldiers later, the Ndipaya were outmatched by Western technology, the natives decided to eat the highly toxic plant in order to become super warriors. As one would expect, this last ditch effort failed and the expedition of soldiers easily gained occupation of the city. Umbrella Africa Laboratory thusly born at the expense of the Ndipaya people.

As a reward for his work with the Stairway of the Sun flowers, Brandon Bailey, a student of Dr. Marcus, was exiled to the Unbrella Africa Laboratory. From here, he would send virus samples to Dr. Marcus’ newly built research center in the Arklay Mountains outside of Raccoon City. It’s here that the main research concerning the progenitor virus occurred. It’s also where Spencer built himself a mansion.

This progenitor virus quickly becomes Umbrella’s bread and butter. Since Spencer was a prudent man, he utilized the architect of his Arklay mansion as well as his family as test subjects for the virus’ research. Only Lisa, the architect’s daughter, survived. Combining it with leeches resulted in the t-virus in 1978. After killing Dr. Marcus, William Birkin and Albert Wesker then preformed further experiments on Lisa. These resulted in the cultivation of the G-virus.

Dr. Marcus instated a comeback tour in 1998. Facilitated by Spencer, who ordered his corpse to be combined with the Queen Leech, a charming monster that resulted from experimentation with the progenitor virus, the tour consisted of unleashing his t-virus into the Arklay Laboratory’s water supply. Chaos ensued, as one would expect, and the laboratory’s personnel are turned into zombies, and without anyone to mind the research specimens, they too escaped into the surrounding area. Dr. Marcus also held an encore performance at the Ecliptic Express, one of Umbrella’s personal company trains. The population of zombies on the train soon increased dramatically.

Though Dr. Marcus did not survive to see it, his revenge fueled rampage eventually led to the Raccoon City Incident. Several years following the government approved sterilization of the city to contain the outbreak, a “suspension of business decree” was imposed on Umbrella USA, Incorporated. Eventually, this led to the corporation officially going bankrupt and shutting down.

RACOON CITY INCIDENT
Exactly sixty-one days after the incident at Arklay Mansion, Umbrella attempted to retrieve a sample of the G-virus from William Birkin working in the laboratory beneath Raccoon City. Skilled as they were in negotiation and nonviolent tactics of persuasion, the reclusive researcher was mortally injured via several bullet wounds. His last ditch effort involved injecting himself with the G-virus, which did have regenerative capabilities.

The plan worked and he survived, but with the small caveat of turning into an unstoppable mutant killing machine. He killed the team sent to negotiate, and during the massacre, the t-virus was released into the sewers. Keeping with tradition, the rats innocently carried the virus throughout the city.

It took two days for the city to dissolve into chaos.

Umbrella, like any good nefarious and all powerful corporation, immediately commences an evacuation of high value personnel. They also dutifully concocted a story describing the radioactive waste leak as the reason for the inevitable quarantine.

A day later, the United States Army is finally called in to evacuate the citizens of Raccoon City, setting up a perimeter around the city. They enforced a quarantine and prevented people from entering the city. Anyone that could afford a helicopter, however, was free to come and go as they pleased. The military had orders not to assist local law enforcement.

It takes a week from the initial release of the virus for all but a few of the city’s population to fall victim to the G-virus and other various bioweapons from Umbrella’s laboratory. When the military barricades making up the quarantine perimeter begin to fail, there were several successful rescues.

The U.S. Government, faced with national security and a city beyond hope, approved a Sterilization Operation for Raccoon City. At dawn on Thursday, October 1st, an experimental non-nuclear missile destroyed what remained of the city, effectively neutralizing the threat.

As a result, global distrust in pharmaceutical companies spread like wildfire and safety precautions were put into place to prevent another outbreak from happening.

BIOTERRORISM SECURITY ASSESSMENT ALLIANCE
The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance started as a private, non-governmental organization tackling biohazard incidents, bioterrorists, and bioweapons. Familiar names that aided in the founding of the organization are Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. Currently they’re officially backed by the United Nations and their headquarters are located in the United Kingdom. However, the funding of the BSAA originally stemmed from the Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies.

In the wake of Umbrella’s very public demise, the financial support of highly influential medical corporations to an organization who fights everything Umbrella brought into the world should come as no surprise. Politically, it’s a brilliant, albeit transparent, move. Additionally, with a large number of Bio Organic Weapons (BOWs) hitting the black market as part of that wake, the need for some way to efficiently combat the growing threat increased exponentially, as did the growth of the BSAA. Headquarters were established around the world. There are eight branches in total.

These branches are not limited to their own jurisdictions. Teams may be allocated to areas outside their branch’s region. This first occurred during the Kijuju Incident, North American branch’s Alpha Team was dispatched first. When they failed, West Africa branch’s Delta Team replaced them to finish carrying out mission directives.

It’s the BSAA who finally track down former Umbrella CEO and pretentious gentleman Oswell E. Spencer hiding in Europe. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine are dispatched to the mansion in late 2006 to capture the elderly man. Per usual, shit hits the fan. Per usual, said fan is propelled by one Albert Wesker. They discover Spencer dead and Wesker to blame. Commence two BSAA agents receiving quite the ass kicking from Wesker regardless of their gunfire and hand to hand combat skills.

Eventually, Wesker stood holding Chris by the throat, poised to murder him just as he had Spencer. To save her partner, Jill tackles Wesker through the window, the pair falling from the high perch of the castle and presumably onto the rocky coast below. Their bodies were never recovered, and three months later, the BSAA created a gravestone for their fallen agent. The loss of his partner hit Chris hard, and he never quite recovers from the tragedy.

Sheva Alomar joins the BSAA in 2008. Assigned to the West Africa Branch, she trains under Captain Josh Stone and becomes the ‘little sister’ of the team.

In March of 2009, the BSAA organized a mission to investigate a black market deal in Kijuju, Africa featuring one Ricardo Irving. They created an interbranch partnership between Sheva Alomar and Chris Redfield to handle the mission, believing that her background and knowledge of the area combined with Chris’ years of experience would result in an easy mission success.

Instead, they uncover a Plagas outbreak and plans for a global release of a deadly virus called Uroboros. During the mission, it was discovered that Tricell has reinvigorated the research abandoned by Umbrella many years prior. In the end, the mission is a success, but losses to the BSAA are substantial.

TRICELL, INCORPORATED
Remember Travis Industries? Since its birth as a trading company in the 18th century, the company had since grown into many subsidiary companies. Recognizing the potential revenue to be found in the medicinal qualities of fauna and flora samples recovered from Africa, they included pharmaceuticals in their multi-industry conglomerate. In the 1960s and in conjunction with the two other primary sectors of their corporation, which were shipping and natural resources, the company reorganized. The result was TRICELL, a new company organized by its three primary market cells.

As a member of the Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies (FPC) via its pharmaceutical division, Tricell didn’t exactly have the trust of the global populace anymore. They, like many other pharmaceutical companies, turned in documents that would incriminate Umbrella to halt any investigations into their own companies. That gesture in combination with funding the BSAA began to restore the company’s image and rescued the pharmaceutical division from bankruptcy.

After the fall of Umbrella Corporation, the niche market it occupied became available at a discount rate. It’s a lucrative market, and Tricell already had a history of ignoring ethics in favor of boosting annual revenues on or off of the books.

Enter Albert Wesker, yet another man with his sights set on becoming an immortal god. It’s a match made in villain heaven, wherever that may be located. He contacted Tricell immediately following his ordeal in Russia circa 2003, and the business arrangement was consummated soon afterwards. He provided viral samples, while they provided the capital and research for his dreams of a new genesis.

In 2005, they acquired a sample of the t-Abyss Virus from Jessica Sherawat, a rogue BSAA operative. When WilPharma, another pharmaceutical giant experimenting heavily in bioweapons, collapsed, Tricell acted honorably and purchased the remains of the company. Samples of the G-virus were recovered from the ruined Air Dome Laboratory. Dutifully, Tricell hacked into the computer of one US senator and wiped it clean to neatly eradicate any lose ends on the matter.

Notice a pattern or possibly déjà vu?

At some point, Wesker and Excella Gionne, the regional director of Tricell’s Africa division, crossed paths and he played her pretentiousness and desire for power like a violin, manipulating her into his global domination plan. She envisioned herself as the ‘Queen’ at his side in this new genesis. This attained him the resources and clout he required to advance his plans.

Tricell received a Plaga sample from Wesker. It developed into Type 2 and Type 3 plagas with the help of a Tricell researcher Ricardo Irving. Furthermore, once Excella secured her position as CEO of Tricell Incorporated, Africa, she and Wesker began to create the Uroboros virus, which is an advanced strain of the progenitor virus.

With data from Umbrella and Spencer’s personal records on hand, Wesker led Tricell to the abandoned Umbrella Africa Laboratory. Billions of dollars and extensive construction created the Uroboros Laboratory deeper underneath the original Umbrella research facility. Wesker and Excella used the massive facility to continue experimenting and developing bioweapons.

UMBRELLA 57TH PLANT
Umbrella 57th Plant existed as a BOW processing facility in an unstable region of West Africa, the factory provided a source of employment and income for approximately 80 percent of the adult population. As a child, BSAA agent Sheva Alomar lived in a nearby village, and her parents worked in the factory. While pay wasn’t terribly stellar, it did provide a consistent flow of income to families in the area, giving parents an opportunity to offer their children a decent upbringing.

In 1994, when Sheva was eight years old, the plant experienced an unidentified catastrophe where BOWs were released from their storage tanks. Researchers were massacred alongside of factory workers. Witnesses outside describe black smoke billowing from the factory as a loud siren blared.
As expected, Umbrella quickly came to the rescue of their investments. Special forces with assault rifles in Hazmat suits arrived on the scene and sanitized the area of all incriminating evidence, witnesses included.

KIJUJU AUTONOMOUS ZONE INCIDENT
The Kijuju Autonomous Zone, a self-governing region of an unidentified West African nation exists within close proximity of the ancient city of the Ndipaya tribe, and therefore, the Uroboros Laboratory created by Tricell. The region remained relatively unstable as well, which made the location and its people optimal for beta testing bioweapons.

While developing better permutations of the Plagas parasite, Tricell tested Type 2 Plagas on the Kijuju populace. Even though it had been engineered to mature at accelerated rate, infestation of the Type 2 still must be obtained by force-feeding an already mature parasite into the mouth of a host. It’s no surprise that hosts were unwilling participants in this process. Still, this form of the Plaga parasite was an easier sell on the black market.

Tricell experimented with a Type 3 Plagas on the Sodibaya tribe, who lived primarily in the wetlands of Kijuju, in April of 2008 by offering pro bono medical treatment for some unmentioned disease. Children died first, as their bodies could not handle the parasites. When the men questioned the deaths of the children, they were informed that the disease had killed them, so they all lined up for more treatment out of fear. The men proceeded to veer into an aggression fueled madness while the women no longer grieved for their dead children. The women too died as a result of the Type 3 Plagas. For unknown reasons, men began to wear tradition garments and war painting. As always, some developed strange mutations.

The additions of the Plagas parasites spurred a nationalist revolution, which the BSAA became aware of thanks to the combined intel of their own informant Reynard Fisher as well as a local blogger named Adam. The situation escalated within several more months, and the Kijujian Army, fearing the spread of this strange increase in hostility and violence, constructed a giant wall to separate the infested areas from the unaffected sections.

Anyone who tried to leave were executed. However, people were free to enter via the Civilian Checkpoint. Go figure.

In March 2009, the BSAA assigned Sheva Alomar and Chris Redfield to investigate intelligence on a bioweapons deal involving Ricardo Irving. At the time of their arrival, no one knew of the Plagas’ presence in the upwelling of nationalist beliefs. Nor did they have any inkling that Wesker and a company that funded the BSAA were involved in a plot to inundate the globe with a deadly virus.

Things escalated quickly once they set foot within the quarantined area, where they posed as really stupid American tourists to gain entrance. At least they’re able to gather their weapons and equipment from Reynard prior to the lovely townsfolk beheading him. From that point forward, Sheva and Chris are on the offensive.

They tailed Irving to complete the mission objective. This tour of Kijuju encompassed attacks from (but not limited to) a giant flying baterpillar combination BOW, a literal giant creature BOW wearing a skirt of persons formally known as Delta Team, and several hundred members of the nationalist supporters. All tried their best to kill them both. During that, Chris discovered evidence that Jill Valentine appeared to still be alive.

By this point in their terrifying ordeal of a mission, Sheva pleaded with Chris to retreat. To her, the situation stood as two against thousands, at least. They had no outside support and she knew damn well neither of them would survive alone. However, once she learned about the situation with Jill and experienced his determination to find her, she decided to stick with her partner. Besides, who else will avenge their fallen brothers?

Eventually, with the help of Josh Stone, they corner Irving on a ship. Instead of getting captured and trying for a plea bargain, Irving injected himself with something a strange woman wearing a mask and a cloak gave him. They kill Irving version 2.0, who pointed them in the direction of some creepy caves.

Now they were cooking with oil. Once they survived some more extremely polite and helpful locals, the pair arrived at the underground Uroboros Labortory. It’s there that the pair step into a large room containing pods of people stacked as far as they could see. Noticing that they’re the same pods seen in the research material of Jill that Chris had obtained, they searched the computer for her pod. After battling a large, arachnid sort of BOW, they were able to open it. As one would expect, that pod was empty and she’s not there.

That’s when Excella decided to show her perfect face. Threats and disdain soon followed from the CEO, which accomplish absolutely nothing aside from alerting Sheva to Tricell’s active participation in the incident. When the two properly encountered Excella again, the cloaked woman fights them off. A stray round knocked away her mask, and surprise, a wild Wesker appeared. Double surprise, the cloaked woman was Jill.

As with all reunions of this sort, an intense battle ensued. Chris, true to form, attempted to reason with her, but she proceeded to not accept any form of discussion on the matter. Triple surprise, there was a device that appeared to work as the source of Wesker’s control over her attached and deeply rooted to her chest. Wesker himself allotted only seven minutes in his busy schedule to play with the pair, and eventually left Jill to handle both Sheva and Chris. The battle resulted in the removal of the device and the return of non-pod person Jill. She then encouraged them to leave her and stop Wesker, and they do just that.

They doggedly pursued both Excella and Wesker throughout the ship. During the battles, they ran into Excella, shooting her case from her hand and collecting the doses of Wesker’s serum contained inside. Shortly thereafter and since Wesker was a loyal friend, he injected Excella with the Uroboros virus and gifted her to Sheva and Chris in hopes that she’ll kill them.

No such luck. They survived and finally caught up to him, and with advice from Jill, the pair worked together to overdose him with his own serum. This weakened him enough to proverbially level the playing field. Except not really, but it did help. Following him onto the bomber by which he intended to achieve global saturation of the Uroboros virus, the pair took him on in close quarters. Chris managed to open the airlock, the pressure differential effectively sucking Wesker out of the bomber, but not before he grabbed onto Sheva’s leg.

Realizing that if she let go, he would finally die and this nightmare would be over, the younger BSAA agent released her grip and started to fall with Wesker. She should have died too, except Chris grabbed her before that could happen, and she doesn’t hesitate to shoot Wesker in the face moments later. Their victory was short lived, their bomber crashing into the caldera of a volcano moments later.

Quadruple surprise: Wesker’s still fucking alive.

Punching a nearby, somehow intact Uroboros missile, the test tube man that refused to die became empowered by the virus. Apparently, he would have survived the saturation. And so the battle continued in the caldera of an active volcano. Next to magma that somehow didn’t melt the rubber on their boots. Unsurprisingly, it took nearly all their ammunition, one punched to pieces boulder, actively dumping him into the molten lava, and then finally two rocket launchers to kill that son of a bitch Wesker. Seriously.

Since they’re otherwise stranded in an active volcano, it’s pretty awesome that Josh and Jill show up with a helicopter and a rope ladder.
